IIT KHARAGPUR students developing drones

A group of students at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur is developing drones using indigenous hardware and software.

The drones, being developed under the institute's Aerial Robotics Kharagpur (ARK) initiative, are being given shape at the Centre for Excellence in Robotics, funded by the Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) facility of the Institute.

The Centre has received funding from the Institute to the extent of Rs 5 crore for 12 projects.

"Under the ARK initiative, drones are being developed, which would be capable of autonomous flight, localisation in GPS-denied environments, and tracking and interacting with mobile ground robots as well as other drones, and much more," said Somesh Kumar of the Department of Mathematics, who is heading the initiative.

The ARK initiative aims to develop a flexible aerial robotics framework, which can be easily used to control aerial vehicles and eventually move to multiple decentralised aerial robot swarms in an outdoor setting.

"The ARK initiative intends to develop drones using indigenous hardware and software. These have various applications, including tracking during search and rescue operations," Kumar said.

"There are several areas where aerial robots can be deployed, such as agriculture technology, mine surveying, surveillance, etc. Aerial robots can be deployed in all those areas where human interaction is impossible either because of life risks or because of inaccessibility," said Gaurav Gardi, a Fourth-Year student of M.Sc. Physics working in the project.

The group participated in the International Aerial Robotics Competition at Beijing, in China, in September.

The ARK was the only team from India, which participated in the competition at the Asia-Pacific venue.

The team participated with a 'hexacopter' designed by the students and completely made of wood. The team was awarded 'Best Team Cooperation Award' for its performance.

The team members were Soumyadeep Mukherjee, Aditya Agarwal, Gaurav Gardi, Kumar Ankit, Kumar Krishna Agarwal, Manash Pratim Das, Sai Ram and Vishnu Sharma.

Why IIT?

IIT JEE is undoubtedly one of the toughest engineering entrances exams in India. Most of the engineering aspirants dream of becoming an IITian. But it is not possible for everyone to make it to the IITs. Among 13 lakh students who appear the JEE Main, only 10 thousand students manage to secure themselves seats in IITs. This should make you think:

You are in one of the premier institute that our country have. You will gain respect from your surrounding people.
You are studying among some of the best brains of our country. You will get the chance to learn many things from them.
IIT is not only about its student doing well in engineering and research but also about learning management, finance, social skills, etc. We have many events and festivals and students will be the one organizing it.
You will get many good facilities such as high speed LAN, DC++ , your own Open Air Theater(IITK),high quality labs and computer center, magnificent library, air conditioned lecture halls, wifi enabled campus, subsidized CCD inside the campus, air strip with gilders of its own, etc.
You will also benefits of being an IITian outside the campus also. Be it the 10-15% discount in private restaurants, free doctor consultation if you have the referral of Health Center of Institute, even discounts in travelling via railways.
There are many clubs such as Dramatics, Dance, Music, Fine Arts, Electronics, Robotics, Aeromodelling, Astronomy to name a few. Through these clubs you can acquire many skills.

The IIT JEE
Every year, the IITs conduct a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to select candidates for the 4-year B.Tech, B.Pharm, 5-year B.Arch, Integrated M.Sc. and M.Tech courses.

Pattern of the IIT JEE
At present, the IIT JEE is a single - stage objective type examination consisting of two papers of three hours duration each to test comprehension & analytical ability of candidates. Both papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2 will each have three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
All questions will be of Objective Type, designed to test aptitude, comprehension and analytical ability of the candidates

Eligibility for the IIT JEE
Candidates appearing in (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination, must secure at least 60%(55% for SC/ST and PD) marks in aggregate in their respective Board Examination.
A student can have only two attempts to write the JEE in the year in which he or she passes the XIIth standard examination and/or in the following year.
Candidates who join any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi, and ISM, Dhanbad through JEE will not be permitted to appear for JEE in future

selection process of IITs

One entrance exam for admission to IITs, NITs and IIITs
The new JEE will consist of 2 Tests viz. Main Test and Advanced Test which will test problem solving ability in basic science subjects - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both Tests will be of 3 hours duration each.
Only the Top 1,50,000 candidates (including all categories) based on performance in JEE (Mains) will qualify to appear in the JEE (Advanced) examination, which will rank candidates for admissions to IITs, provided the candidates are among the top 20% high scorers of their respective boards in class XII examination.
As the above selection pattern gives a substantial importance to the Std. XII Board marks, it is very essential that every student prepares well not only for the proposed JEE, but for Std. XII also.
